Book Covers!

If you ready other blogs, you know that I've been busy writing. I've also been very busy creating covers for the works. Below is the first of several I have completed for my Kindle-published work entitled Melange

70's Record Cover

This is a massive drawing finished with permanent marker for a Design class project. Our instructor asked us to find elements of architecture and furniture and draw them, then use the drawings in unconventional, abstract ways to produce something totally different from the original materials. I'm really into spirals, so naturally I took some of them and their curli-cue cousins inherent in a lot of ornate carved furniture and incorporated them into the final design. Since I'm such a figure nut, I also found the figureheads carved into the edges of mantels and chairs fascinating. Oh, and that fish. Who couldn't resist something as bizarre as that for a table footer?

Its been years and I'm still deciding if I should paint it or simply leave it black and white.

David and Bathsheba

While practicing my figure drawing and copying a seated figure from a book, I started to have a little fun with him, and gave him the tail, the mask and the cranial ridges. He seemed too passive, so I gave him an activity, and the bone harp was born. Of course, when I thought of the harp, I started thinking about what kind of strange musician he would be. David from the bible popped into my head, and of course who would he be looking at? Bathsheba of course, bathing on the roof.

You probably don't want me to start explaining my process or psyche any further. Don't worry, I can't explain it myself.

Scrutiny

This was a watercolor I had done in high school using almost exclusively my fingers.

Figure backside

This was done while I was in college, with red conte on newsprint. I've always preferred the backsides of my subjects because it lends itself to an abstraction.

Desktop Background

This is purely digital. Just a background I created just fooling around in Photoshop while chatting on the phone. (Would that make it a digital doodle?)
